Portugal Barcelos

Capture true Portuguese living by staying in one of these family owned Manor Houses or Quintas which have been specially selected for their character and ambience.  You will enjoy old-fashioned hospitality in lovely surroundings. However, staying in a Manor House is not quite the same as in a hotel. Mealtimes are sometimes less flexible and often restricted to breakfast. You may not be able to order a drink in the daytime and credit cards are seldom accepted.  The Simpler Hotels featured are Estalagems and Albergarias in regions of the country often missed by tourists. You can be assured of a friendly welcome and the owner is invariably on hand to advise and offer suggestions for visiting local places of interest.

Quinta do Convento de Franqueira

This fine property dates back to the 16th century and is thought to have been built from stones taken from a nearby ruined medieval castle. It stands on a hillside in tranquil surroundings. Individually furnished bedrooms. The long drawing room sits above ancient cloisters. Colourful gardens. Spring fed swimming pool. There is a six hectare vineyard producing Vinho Verde wine. The Quinta serves breakfast only but nearby Barcelos (5 kms) has many restaurants and a famous Thursday market.
